Switching Registers

In this 60 Second Singing Tip, I share what will help you when switching registers for a smooth transition between your head voice and chest voice. The struggle we face in switching between chest voice and head voice is caused by the vocal chords being too tense when we are singing in our lower register. This tightness of the vocal chords causes them to close up making it difficult to then sing with them open in our upper register. The problem is not that our chest register is too low, but if we try to sing higher than it will allow, we force ourselves into a position where the chords are trying to close. You could also think of it like a rubber band. If you stretch a rubber band too far, it gets hard and difficult to move. It’s in a similar way that when we push our chest register too high, it makes it difficult to pass over smoothly into head voice. We need to make sure our chest register is relaxed and available as a high as possible before attempting to switch over into head voice. Powerful Head Voice

Do you have a powerful head voice? Higher notes with power and ease! When singing with a powerful head voice, support the sound with your diaphragm and keep your throat and jaw relaxed. This will enable you to sing higher notes with power and ease! Here are some tips: Keep your throat relaxed. Don’t press down too hard on the back of your tongue when singing in head voice; instead, maintain good posture and body alignment as you glide easily into this register using portamento through bridges in your voice. Head voice is a valuable tool for singers. It allows you to sing higher with more power and ease, which is why it’s an important part of singing technique. How to get RID of tension

It used to drive me nuts as a developing singer when my teachers would point out my jaw or neck singing tension when I sang.   This resulted in the typical self-care advice. They would say “Go to yoga, get a massage or go get acupuncture”, all of which I would do. . . . And I would feel great. . . . And then I would come back to singing and be RIGHT back where I started in the same tension again.  It would completely frustrate me to no end!!!! Does switching back and forth from chest voice to head voice give you anxiety? Want to know how to transition from chest voice to head voice smoothly and reliably EVERY SINGLE TIME?  If your answer is “Yes!”read on . . . . First off, you are totally not alone. The ability to transition from chest voice to head voice smoothly is the source of SO much insecurity for so many singers. And second, I don’t blame you! The middle voice can be a tricky part of the voice to negotiate and downright scary without good tools. Today I have some insights that will help. Many singers and voice teachers call this part of the voice “the break” because that’s exactly how it sounds and feels to so many of you. . . . like a fissure in your mechanism preventing you from moving fluidly from one register to another. Halloween this past week got me thinking about the relationship between fear and singing technique. Ghosts and zombies have nothing on the kind of fear that the opening of Gilda’s aria from Rigoletto used to elicit in me.
