One of the things professional singers worry about is how to build a loyal audience and make a sustainable income doing what they love. Recently, I’ve become friends with someone who knows ALL about how to do that!! Michael Walker is the host of the Modern Musician Podcast – an educational podcast for musicians looking to grow their audience online and make a sustainable income. Michael provides artists with the tools necessary to create a lasting career in the music industry and so much more. This week he invited me to be a guest on his Modern Musician Podcast to talk shop! We got down and dirty about all things singing and how professional singers can breakthrough the noise to get noticed, make an impact and build a successful career. Excited to be a guest on this week’s episode of The Modern Musician podcast! Listen to the episode HERE.
How fast can you take your singing from where it is now, to a place where everything is firing on all cylinders? Where it’s powerful/consistent/reliable and feels amazing, and you’re finally seeing success in your career? (I’ll give you a hint. . . .it’s faster then you think!!) Maybe right now your singing career isn’t working how you’d like: You haven’t figured out how to navigate opportunities in this new normal You haven’t figured out how to stand out from all the competition Perhaps your sound is unreliable so you haven’t been putting yourself out there You aren’t getting the opportunities you want You’re not breaking through to that next level. How fast can you change that completely – where your singing is dialed in and you’re thriving? Where you’re bringing new opportunities in the door, you’re finally off the side-job hamster wheel and most importantly, you’re making the impact your voice was meant to make in the world? It’s an incredible feeling when you live your life that way! In my experience, that all starts with ONE specific shift: STOP BECOMING START BEING You don’t have to become something……you already ARE something! Yet most of us have so much
After you’ve had yet another disappointing audition or go months between paid gigs, do you ever wonder if this is as far as you’ll go? Here’s the thing. . . . You’re not alone. Nearly every singer I know has been through this at one time or another. You’ve become so good at second-guessing, self-doubt and control that you just can’t see the forest through the trees anymore. But the solution lies in your ability to internalize two key truths: Singing is a metaphor for life. And as such, the journey is the thing! We never arrive. Our lives are an ever-changing and constantly evolving odyssey and so too is our singing. It is incumbent on you to figure out how to enjoy the journey because if you don’t, then you’re missing the whole point. Changing your thinking = changing your singing. How and what you think about your singing has a direct effect on what your body does to produce the sound. We all have a conditioned set of beliefs (from our individual families, communities, religions, schooling, experiences etc.) that can subconsciously affect our ability to realize the full potential of our voice. These beliefs sabotage your ability to fully internalize
Bad news – traditional vocal training doesn’t work. Ask most singers if they feel their career success reflects the amount of training they’ve had. I promise you – the majority will tell you one of two things. Either they’ve spent many years and tons of money on voice lessons and still don’t have a high level career, OR they’ve had some lessons here and there but never stuck with it because they weren’t getting the breakthroughs the needed so they’re still on the bench. This is because the way singers are currently trained DOES NOT WORK. So many singers have been burned by the current system – it’s been failing singers for decades now. Maybe it’s even happened to you and you recognize yourself in one of the examples above. This is something we ALL need to consider carefully if we want to be able to make an impact with our singing in a big way. Here’s what I know: Singers don’t just show up to their training needing technique. They’ve also got tons of emotional blocks and loads of mind trash preventing them from singing like a badass and having a big career. Some things to consider: * Ever wonder why
Did you know that the main difference between seasoned singers who build their careers to widespread acclaim and the ones who remain in ‘Struggleville’ has nothing to do with talent or technique? To grow your singing career fast and make a massive impact with your performances / recordings / auditions, you’ve got to understand this and get it right. I want to share with you what I’ve learned so you can have the freedom in your singing and abundance in your career that you deserve. In this video we discuss exactly what your need to do to deliver when it counts so that you can go from ‘struggleville’ to successful!
Do you want to know the difference between the singers who succeed at a high level and the ones who don’t? You know, the ones who seem to always work? They always get the gig. They have no problem packing a venue, getting lots of people follow them on social media. And they really know how to nail a performance, enthrall an audience and how to perform with impact.… The truth is it has nothing to do with becoming an insta-celebrity. It has nothing to do with building a following & creating massive amounts of content. It has nothing to do with going to Juilliard or Berkeley School of Music… And it has even less to do with their talent. It’s incredibly simple, but the truth is most vocal coaches ignore it. If you want to learn this simple truth so that your performances, auditions and recordings bring you the results that are commensurate with your talent, then it’s time to go deep on how to perform with impact. Yeah, you need great breath support, but what will kill your sound even if you have the best support is when I hear singers say “it’s not that bad”. Because “It’s not that bad” is a death sentence. And hear me out before you think this is some scare tactic….. There are some real mindset blocks to work through here. We’ve all been in the phase of “well, it’s not that bad”. My auditions aren’t THAT bad…. I usually don’t bomb them, I just need somebody to take a chance on me. My recordings aren’t THAT bad…. I just need an angel investor for the right ________ (fill in the blank: marketing, producer, etc) Oh, the tension/strain/vocal fatigue I experience isn’t THAT bad…..other singers are far worse – I just have to not sing for the next few days then I’m ok. It’s really not that bad…I mean, yeah, I spend more time at my side job so I can support my singing then I do actually singing (which makes me super exhausted and burnt out for when I do have opportunities to sing), but hey…other people are far worse, at least I have a job. Oh, it’s not that
Here’s a TRUTH BOMB for you: Your singing has been unwittingly set up for failure. . . and you don’t even know it. I KNOW you dream about a day when you have finally built a big, sustainable singing career. A day when you give consistently impactful performances that win auditions, sell out tours and make award winning albums… WITHOUT burning yourself out, resorting to industry fads or having to be someone you’re not just to get noticed. And there’s so much frustration and anxiety because you’ve been training and hustling for so long and you’re not seeing the results of that work in the form of the thriving career you want. You KNOW you’ve got talent but you feel overlooked as other singers get the gigs. You find yourself getting more and more in your head and questioning if you’re really good enough to make it. You’re scared of quitting but you’re also scared of this being as good as gets….of never being able to get to that next level. Don’t worry, it’s normal. The bigger the dream the bigger the fear. But here’s the problem: You have been unwittingly set up for failure – and it’s not your fault! The rotten
This is what my studio is all about. . . . . . . .Cause you can work on your technique forever, you can invest in producers/marketing/young-artist-programs, you can move cities, do social media campaigns, network till you’re blue in the face. . . . And NONE of that matters if you aren’t making an impact with your voice when it counts. Ask Grace Theisen and Jilian Linklater (both recent grads of The Intensive) what happens once you do the work and you’ve made The 5 Shifts. You get development deals and you win competitions just like they did. . . . And you do this not years later, but within A FEW MONTHS. Curious about The 5 Shifts? I talk about them in this free Masterclass. Watch Now: https://joinnow.live/s/tW5d7H
