Switching Registers

In this 60 Second Singing Tip, I share what will help you when switching registers for a smooth transition between your head voice and chest voice. The struggle we face in switching between chest voice and head voice is caused by the vocal chords being too tense when we are singing in our lower register. This tightness of the vocal chords causes them to close up making it difficult to then sing with them open in our upper register. The problem is not that our chest register is too low, but if we try to sing higher than it will allow, we force ourselves into a position where the chords are trying to close. You could also think of it like a rubber band. If you stretch a rubber band too far, it gets hard and difficult to move. It’s in a similar way that when we push our chest register too high, it makes it difficult to pass over smoothly into head voice. We need to make sure our chest register is relaxed and available as a high as possible before attempting to switch over into head voice. You’ve probably been struggling for years with these transitions on switching

Powerful Head Voice

Do you have a powerful head voice? Higher notes with power and ease! When singing with a powerful head voice, support the sound with your diaphragm and keep your throat and jaw relaxed. This will enable you to sing higher notes with power and ease! Here are some tips: Keep your throat relaxed. Don’t press down too hard on the back of your tongue when singing in head voice; instead, maintain good posture and body alignment as you glide easily into this register using portamento through bridges in your voice. Head voice is a valuable tool for singers. It allows you to sing higher with more power and ease, which is why it’s an important part of singing technique. Optimize Singing Performances

Today I want to talk about how to optimize singing performances! So, you want to optimize your singing. Good for you! Singing is an awesome thing to do and it’s great to have a goal of improving it—it’s fun, social, and can even be lucrative if you’re good enough. But what exactly is optimizing? In this context, optimizing means taking actions that will make the most effective use of your time so that you get better results faster. Let’s break down those terms: effective use of time means that the amount of effort required for something should match the reward received from doing it. For example: running around in circles for three hours might feel good at first but after about 20 minutes all the endorphins are gone and now all that remains is sore joints and tired muscles; on the other hand playing chess requires just as much concentration but gives way more benefits because there’s more room for growth (and winning!). So when we talk about making effective use of our time with regards to singing we mean focusing on activities that help us improve with little or no cost (in terms of resources) involved.” It means that

Maybe right now your singing career isn't working how you'd like

How To Get Lightning Fast Breakthroughs In Your Singing Career

How fast can you take your singing from where it is now, to a place where everything is firing on all cylinders? Where it’s powerful/consistent/reliable and feels amazing, and you’re finally seeing success in your career? (I’ll give you a hint. . . .it’s faster then you think!!) Maybe right now your singing career isn’t working how you’d like: You haven’t figured out how to navigate opportunities in this new normal You haven’t figured out how to stand out from all the competition Perhaps your sound is unreliable so you haven’t been putting yourself out there You aren’t getting the opportunities you want You’re not breaking through to that next level. It’s an incredible feeling when you live your life that way! In my experience, that all starts with ONE specific shift: STOP BECOMING START BEING You don’t have to become something……you already ARE something! Yet most of us have so much

Classical Singing vs. Pop Singing – Head Voice

I’ve got a question for you. .  .  . How do you feel about singing in your head voice? Is it no biggie? Or do you cringe at the mere thought of it? Or somewhere in between? If you’re a classical singer: You probably luuuuuuuuuuv singing in your head voice. After all, it’s the warm fuzzy place you call home ninety percent of the time. It’s your happy place – UNTIL – someone asks you to sing a contemporary pop type song (think cousin Ida who will just die unless you sing Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” at her wedding) and then you panic! You think: How do I sing those notes in a healthy way without shoving my chest voice up too high? If I use my head voice I’ll sound like an opera singer trying to sing pop which is the worst. (Sigh – maybe I’ll be mysteriously sick for the wedding) How do I sing in head voice for pop music? If you’re a pop singer: You probably have more of a love-hate relationship with singing in your head voice.  Using head voice for pop music seems to bring up all kinds of anxiety and confusion. Maybe you’ve even gone so far

How To Sing Without A Nasal Tone

It’s coming on summer and one of my favorite things to do here in Los Angeles in summer is go to concerts at The Hollywood Bowl. Hearing amazing music under the stars on a balmy evening with a gourmet picnic and a great glass of wine – well, there’s not much else that can beat that in my book. (If you’re not from L.A. or have never been to The Bowl before, here’s a photo:) Then I realized that The Hollywood Bowl actually plays a huge part in what I teach and how I sing, and THAT makes me love The Bowl even more! You see, so many singers suffer from a brassy or nasal resonance in their sound. How do you sing without a nasal tone? How do you fix a brassy sound? You guessed it . . . . The Hollywood Bowl! In today’s video I will explain how The Hollywood Bowl can help you sing without a nasal tone and rid your resonance of an overly brassy timbre.
