How many of you have felt instances over the last few months where your voice just doesn’t feel “right” or “the same” but you weren’t sick or having allergies and your teacher is telling you that your technique is fine?  The culprit could likely be air quality. This has been a rough year for many of us when it comes to air quality because of the massive fires that have affected large parts of the western United States. Even if you don’t live in the immediate area where the fire is burning, wind patterns can cause smoke and particulate matter into your area and you may have been affected. Even as we speak, Southern California is facing another massive fire and I’m hearing significantly more complaints from singers noticing things like loss of vocal range, increased phlegm and hoarseness. Singers Are Not A Commodity

There’s something I want you to tattoo on your heart: Other singers (ie. your competitors) are irrelevant. I hear a lot of singers stressing: “Oh…but so many other singers are already doing this [song, genre. style].” Okay……..so what?!?!?!? Does that mean that they’re the ONLY singer who can be successful in your space? That there’s only room for one person to succeed in your genre? Heck NO! Listen: if you’re a pro singer – your audience is NOT *just* buying a performance. When your listeners are scouring iTunes for new music, they’re not just buying your song. When you audition, the panel is not just buying your ability to deliver a performance. They are buying into YOU. Your energy, your point of view, your ESSENCE. Yes, of course they want a song or a performance – but they can get that from a million other singers and a million other songs. But do they WANT to do that? No! They want someone they can relate to. Career Advice For Singers During COVID-19

Some career advice for singers during Covid-19…… I’ve been thinking about time lately. (Covid-19 is definitely making me introspective these days!) Being stuck at home without the usual daily routine – I’m experiencing time so much differently than usual. And I’m so present to the fact that none of us are promised a tomorrow. That could be seen as very morbid, or it could be really motivating depending on your mindset. And I know that a lot of you reading this may not yet be where you want to be in your life, in your singing or in your career yet. Then the thought came to me…..what if there were a pill that could magically get you to that next level in your career right this moment, would you take it? Of course you would! Who wouldn’t want to skip all the periods of self-doubt and angst we go through on this artistic journey? But then the thought came to me……….what if it doesn’t have to be such a struggle? The more time I spend working with mind/body connections in singers, the more I am convinced that the “magical pill” to unlocking the consistency and growth we all want, is in understanding how to use Present Moment
