Belly Breathing

Belly breathing is a great way to calm and focus yourself. In this episode, we’ll learn what it is and why it’s important for everyone to do! What is Belly Breathing? You’ve probably heard the term “belly breathing.” But what does it mean? Belly breathing is a common term for diaphragmatic breathing, which is the most efficient way to breathe. Diaphragmatic breathing also goes by belly breathing because of its location in your body—your diaphragm moves down when you inhale and up when you exhale, which creates space between your ribs and abdomen. This type of respiration has many benefits: It helps keep your blood pressure low, allows more oxygen into your lungs (which raises their capacity), improves concentration and mental clarity, boosts energy levels by increasing blood flow in the brain (and thus oxygen delivery), reduces fatigue after physical exertion or stressful situations such as public speaking or heavy lifting at work; and even helps reduce snoring! Why is this bad? You may be wondering why belly breathing is bad for your voice. After all, doesn’t everyone breathe and what’s wrong with that? Belly breathing is not a bad thing, you just have to learn how to properly. When

Maybe right now your singing career isn’t working how you’d like: You haven’t figured out how to navigate opportunities in this new normal You haven’t figured out how to stand out from all the competition Perhaps your sound is unreliable so you haven’t been putting yourself out there You aren’t getting the opportunities you want You’re not breaking through to that next level. It’s an incredible feeling when you live your life that way! Physics of Support

The physics of support, what does that mean in singing? Understanding how your body works while singing, so that you can improve your technique and avoid injury. The role of the abdominal wall The abdominal muscles are the largest muscles in your body. They are an external oblique muscle, which means they run from the bottom of your ribcage to the top of your pelvis. These sheets of muscle help with torso stability and control breathing. The most important function for athletes is their ability to resist strain on your lower back and spine by keeping your core strong so you don’t injure yourself during a heavy lift or high impact movement like running or jumping. The role of the abdominal wall during weight lifting is twofold: it protects our internal organs from injury, and it helps us maintain good posture throughout our activities. The rectus abdominis (or “six-pack”) flexes forward when performing sit-ups or crunches; however, this isn’t always necessary in athletics because other parts of our bodies often do this work instead—like pulling up on a barbell while doing squats while wearing weightlifting gloves! The role of the pelvic floor The pelvic floor muscles are a group of

Inhale Powerfully

Can you inhale powerfully when you sing? Feel tired after a big inhale? Feel like you don’t have enough lung capacity to sing how you want to? Singing can be hard, but it doesn’t have to be… In today’s post, we’ll talk about one of the most important elements of singing—breath control. This is a crucial skill that will help you make your voice sound better and last longer during performances. Who doesn’t want that?! We’ll discuss how breathing affects the way you sing, some common challenges that arise when people try to breathe while they sing, and strategies for improving your breath control so you can see amazing results right away! In this #60SecondSingingTip, I breakdown exactly how to achieve an inhale powerfully, so that you can support those big notes with less effort. Watch this video now!  . Phrase Stability

Let’s talk Phrase Stability.  Do you know what it’s like to start a phrase high and then crash down at the end? It’s not fun… It can leave an audience or listener feeling unfulfilled, like something is missing from the experience. Furthermore, not fun for you as the singer! Learn a simple tip that will help you maintain phrase stability throughout your entire performance! Phrase Stability Stable phrases are more musical. Stable phrases are more powerful. Stable phrases are more expressive. And of course, we can’t forget the most important reason of all for using stable phrasing—it makes your music sound better! Are you soaring as you approach the top of a phrase, only to lose control and come crashing down? This common problem is when a singer pushes too hard, causing them to push past their limits. It’s important to understand how phrase stability works in order for us to fix it. What does “phrase stability” mean? It means controlling your voice at the end of each musical unit (a thought/idea). When we talk about mastering this skill, we call it control. Phrase stability is important because if your phrases are unstable and not controlled, then they can sound

How to get RID of tension

It used to drive me nuts as a developing singer when my teachers would point out my jaw or neck singing tension when I sang.   This resulted in the typical self-care advice. They would say “Go to yoga, get a massage or go get acupuncture”, all of which I would do. . . . And I would feel great. . . . And then I would come back to singing and be RIGHT back where I started in the same tension again.  It would completely frustrate me to no end!!!! I KNEW that the singing tension was preventing me from my most powerful sound. However nothing I tried had any effect on it UNTIL. . . . I figured out a really simple truth, and I want to share it with you in my next live! Watch the video below now to learn how!  . Classical Singing vs. Pop Singing – Head Voice

I’ve got a question for you. .  .  . How do you feel about singing in your head voice? Is it no biggie? Or do you cringe at the mere thought of it? Or somewhere in between? If you’re a classical singer: You probably luuuuuuuuuuv singing in your head voice. After all, it’s the warm fuzzy place you call home ninety percent of the time. It’s your happy place – UNTIL – someone asks you to sing a contemporary pop type song (think cousin Ida who will just die unless you sing Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” at her wedding) and then you panic! You think: How do I sing those notes in a healthy way without shoving my chest voice up too high? If I use my head voice I’ll sound like an opera singer trying to sing pop which is the worst. (Sigh – maybe I’ll be mysteriously sick for the wedding) How do I sing in head voice for pop music? If you’re a pop singer: You probably have more of a love-hate relationship with singing in your head voice.  Using head voice for pop music seems to bring up all kinds of anxiety and confusion. Maybe you’ve even gone so far

Why You Have Tension & Strain When You Sing (and other reasons high notes are hard)

The Holy Grail for singers is the ability to sing without strain and tension throughout the entire expanse of your range while finding a free, powerful, resonant and vulnerable sound. Simple right???? I’m rolling my eyes right now – you probably are too. I feel you. I mean, if singing like that were simple, you’d be doing it by now. You would never strain going for high notes, you would never tense up at the end of a long phrase, you’d never feel anxious about what sound was going to come out – it would be amazing! The thing is, there’s a really good reason you’re frustrated, and guess what? It’s not your fault. Odds are, nobody ever told you about The Negative Feedback Loop Of Tension! I was reminded of The Negative Feedback Loop Of Tension recently when I got this message from a member of my virtual voice studio named Frankie. He writes:  “Just found your Chanel and I am hooked so far. I do need help with one thing. I have so much strain and tension and it will not go. I have watched hundreds of videos, honestly if not near thousands. When I push more and
