What Perfectionism, Joy and Detachment Have To Do With Singing

I went to an elementary school talent show recently, and it was about as chaotic and hysterical as you would imagine. But one thing struck me as each kid got up to do their thing – how much JOY they had while performing. It didn’t matter how good or bad of a dancer/singer/magician/violinist they actually were. Those kids were just SO happy to be up there performing their little hearts out, sharing their excitement and energy with us. It got me thinking how far we stray from that as we get older. Remember how it felt to sing when you were younger? I used to dance around my bedroom in my jammies singing to Whitney Houston and George Michael (I’m a child of the 80’s, what can I say!). Remember how it felt before singing became this thing you had to conquer and perfect? The thing is, perfectionism leads us to over control. The more we try to control our sound, the less we trust our technique and the worse our performances become. Perfectionism is the thief of JOY. Yet so many of us are such control freaks and perfectionists around our singing! I should know because once upon a

Perfectionism: The Thief Of Good Singing

Sometimes the things that improve our singing the most have nothing to do with singing at all. This couldn’t be more true when it comes to the standards we set for ourselves and why I say that perfectionism is the thief of good singing. We all want to sound good but at what point does that tip into perfectionism, and how can you know? Here are a few questions to ask yourself: Do I set standards waaaaay higher and more demanding for myself then the standards I apply to my friends/colleagues/family? Do I ever find that I have all-or-nothing thinking where I feel “almost perfect” as a failure? Do I ever have difficulty taking pride in my accomplishments because I am so focused on tiny perceived mistakes or imperfections in my work that I have trouble acknowledging the larger achievement? If you answered “Yes” to any of these questions then you, my friend, just might be a perfectionist. Welcome to the club! Illustrious members include Steve Jobs, Mozart, Flaubert so you are in very good company. The thing is, while perfectionism may work for some people, it is mostly disastrous for singers. When we feel we have to be perfect

HOW SUCCESSFUL SINGERS THINK

Are You WIRED For a Successful Singing Career? –       When it comes to nailing auditions & recordings are you able to get in the door but the results are not consistently what you want?   –       Do you find your insecure thoughts ever hijack your brain when you’re in a callback or a showcase? –       Do you feel super confident one minute, and the next it’s as if insecurity or perfectionism jumps into the driver’s seat and takes control (taking you helplessly along for the ride?)   Sure, you want to up-level your singing career  –       you’re tired of getting underpaid singing local and regional gigs,  –       you’re tired of watching people less talented then you surpass you and get the opportunities YOU want    but let’s get vulnerable for just a moment. . . . .   Deep down, I KNOW you’ve had days (or weeks or months) where you’re thinking: –       “what am I doing here? My normie friends are moving up in their careers, making real income, buying houses, finally achieving things and I still feel like I’m at the kid’s

Lightning Fast Breakthroughs

How fast can you scale your singing career from where it is now, to a place where everything is firing on all cylinders? Where your voice is powerful/consistent/reliable and feels amazing? (I’ll give you a hint. . . .it’s faster then you think!!) Maybe right now your singing career isn’t working how you’d like: You haven’t figured out how to get through this new normal You haven’t figured out how to stand out from all the competition Perhaps your sound is unreliable so you haven’t been putting yourself out there You aren’t getting the opportunities you want You’re not breaking through to that next level. How fast can you change that completely – where your singing is dialed in and you’re thriving? Where you’re bringing new opportunities in the door, you’re finally off the side-job hamster wheel and most importantly, you’re making the impact your voice was meant to make in the world? It’s an incredible feeling when you live your life that way! In my experience, that all starts with ONE specific shift: STOP BECOMING START BEING You don’t have to become something……you already ARE something! Yet most of us have so much “mind trash” that convinces us we

Does your singing career feeling like Groundhog Day? READ ME

If you are a seasoned singer who is currently feeling frustrated with where your singing career is….. And you’re ready to bust through the blocks, build a foundation, and sing in a way that yields much bigger results…… And not just any results, but the kind that you’re actually excited about… Then you won’t want to miss what I have to share with you today. Since 1999, I’ve sang with opera companies around the country, made two pop records, sang opera on movie soundtracks, sang pop in national commercials for major brands, and had my voice and songs licensed by TV shows on every major network…. my voice is even in a singing Barbie doll! One could say that I’ve got that whole “singing” thing down. But what looks like a whole lot of success on the outside, was really just my own limiting beliefs run riot on the inside. See, what you don’t know is: I ran from genre to genre, from one city to another (NY to LA), from one goal to another, achieving a modest amount of success in one place before I’d reach a wall that I couldn’t figure out how to get past to sing any better,

Singers Are Not A Commodity

There’s something I want you to tattoo on your heart: Other singers (ie. your competitors) are irrelevant. I hear a lot of singers stressing: “Oh…but so many other singers are already doing this [song, genre. style].” Okay……..so what?!?!?!? Does that mean that they’re the ONLY singer who can be successful in your space? That there’s only room for one person to succeed in your genre? Heck NO! Listen: if you’re a pro singer – your audience is NOT *just* buying a performance. When your listeners are scouring iTunes for new music, they’re not just buying your song. When you audition, the panel is not just buying your ability to deliver a performance. They are buying into YOU. Your energy, your point of view, your ESSENCE. Yes, of course they want a song or a performance – but they can get that from a million other singers and a million other songs. But do they WANT to do that? No! They want someone they can relate to. They want someone who speaks to them. They want the experience of engaging with YOU. THAT IS WHY: SINGERS ARE *NOT* A COMMODITY. It doesn’t matter how many other singers do the exact same

Truth Bomb

I’m gonna be brutally honest for a second. Right now, there are thousands of singers trying to make it in this business. They’re twisting themselves into pretzels to be, sound and look like what they think the industry wants. They’re obsessively focused on mastering technique. They’re going on TV reality shows like The Voice, Idol  and AGT just to get noticed. They’re even paying  to perform instead of getting paid to perform (pay-to-play gigs and YAPs). And despite all of that, most of them aren’t even close to getting paid to sing regularly, much less touring around the world to widespread acclaim. If you’ve been following me for a while, then you know that the strategies I mentioned above – people pleasing the industry, technique tunnel vision, reality shows and “pay-to play” gigs  – are absolutely worthless, in my opinion. If you want a world class singing career, you’ll never get there in a million years if you do those things. There’s a much shorter path. But is that the REAL reason talented, professional singers are struggling? No. The real reason is that most of these singers lack vulnerability. VULNERABILITY. When they perform, they present a façade of who they think they need to

StarWars & Singing: How To Sing Without Tension

One of the things many singers struggle with is how to sing without tension. If you know me, then you can guess my response for how to sing without tension has something to do with the mind/body effect on your singing technique. There’s a quote in Star Wars that I love. When Yoda is instructing Luke Skywalker, he says: “Do. Or do not. There is no try.” Singers, this is your mantra!!! It applies to you in the same way it applies to Luke when he’s stuck in the swamp. When we try, we tend to force, manipulate, over-think and overdo which all causes physical tension. We tense because we don’t inherently trust ourselves to make the sound we want without any excess “trying”. Luke tries to force a solution in the swamp and nothing is working. But when he heeds Yoda’s words, stops trying so hard and trusts his training and abilities, he is able to channel the Force to get the ship out of the swamp. When we are in “try” mode, like Luke, we don’t believe we can get what we want unless we try really hard. And just like Luke, all that trying gets in the

What Singers Can Learn From Olympians

Using Mindfulness to Improve Your Singing Technique I’m a huge fan of the Olympics, so as you can guess, I’m in hog heaven right now tuning in each night to see the latest from the Winter Games in South Korea. As I watched legendary snowboard champion Shaun White pull off a come-back to get the gold, it got me thinking, as I often do, about parallels to singing. It occurrs to me that training more like an Olympic athlete can help you improve your singing technique. Singing is an artistic endeavor, but in my view, it is also an athletic endeavor. It involves training your body to do the same thing over and over for a desired outcome just as any athlete does. Physically, it is no different then Shaun White training his body to do the mechanics of his amazing snowboard tricks so that when he gets into the competition, he achieves a peak performance that appears effortless. Just like any athlete, a singer’s body cannot do what her brain is sabotaging. While Olympians and pro athletes figured out a long time ago that in order to achieve success, training their mental game is just as important as training
